Intersectional
“Intersectional” presents a complex picture of intersectional difference and inequality that now characterizes the lives of many individuals in the twenty-first century. This poem seeks to question why social differences are constantly labeled but never truly addressed beyond piecemeal campaigns and often lacking legislation and widespread representation.
Growing older I have seen firsthand how intersectional differences impact the lives of many. This is evident in terms of intersectional power, oppression, and the ramifications of the latter leading to relative and absolute poverty, and diminished life chances slain by those in power. I first understood intersectionality whilst talking to a friend during my first year at university in Amsterdam. This chat showed me just how different I was from the dominant groups within that society. In terms of my multiculturalism and mixed-race background as well as my social and religious experiences.
This poem is evidence of how narratives surrounding Intersectionality present both intersections and divergence in the twenty-first century, ultimately creating a world where power relationships remain, but heavy awareness of inequality multidimensional has grown.
